Surrealism.

Surrealism - SUR REALISM - above and outside of reality.

Man torn asunder by rationalism, civilization, and language.

  • How are we lessened by realism?
  • Reality trims too much from you and your responsibilities
  • The language we’ve learned cuts off part of reality from us - cuts off our creativity
  • What has been taken from us by civilization
  • Man is at all times at least partially discontent in civilization - in his civilization.
  • “Violated in our acculturation”

Le merveilleux: the marvelous, the wonder

what is outside logic but not necessarily false - coincidence, deja vu, dreams, fantasies, etc.

Civilization and its Discontents
Diary of an Opium Eater

The notion of freedom proves the existence of constraints.

  • Without something holding us back, why would we long so strongly to be free?

Violence, humor dislocate reality. Debilitating. A way to regain dominance.

Madness:

  • Paranoia: reality is transformed to suit the subconscious needs
  • Paranoiac criticism
  • Automatic writing of patients reveals something more

TENSION.
